Neighbourhood Watch is one of the biggest and most successful crime prevention initiatives ever, now involving millions of people across the country. It is based on the simple idea that you and your neighbours can help to reduce crime and create a better place to live, work and play.
Neighbourhood Watch Coordinators play a key role in sharing information between residents and the police.
NHW schemes are grassroots initiatives, meaning they are owned and run by residents for residents, not by the police, although they receive support by them.
The primary goal of Neighbourhood Watch is to prevent crime and anti-social behaviour by fostering strong community relationships and encouraging residents to look out for each other. Reporting suspicious activity and taking proactive security measures to deter crime.
NHW schemes involve close liaison between households, the local police, councils and other partners allowing for early detection and prevention of minor problems before they escalate.
Equips residents with knowledge and tools to protect themselves, their property and their community
NHW schemes can lead to safer neighbourhoods, stronger community bonds, and a greater sense of security for residents.
Discount on security items such as alarms and CCTV for members
Street signage to discourage crime.
Updates from police on crime trends and prevention tips.
NHW is not just about crime prevention – it is about building a stronger, more connected community where everyone looks out for each other.
HertsWatch / NHW uses the Herts Connected messaging system supplied by Hertfordshire Police to communicate with members.
It allows you to voice your opinions about policing in your local area, in your own words and in your own time.
You don’t need to sign up – all your feedback is completely anonymous.

Sadly it’s the end of Hertfordshire’s journey with OWL, but it will continue to operate in London along with the mobile app. Your account will be deleted in line with GDPR.
Thank you for using OWL and helping to make it the most successful community engagement system in the UK. Please enjoy the farewell video below. Turn up the volume and click on it to play. Subtitles available.
